Conversas Rotterdam 3rd edition

January 1, 2015 posted in collaboration, events, projects

Conversas is a series of weekly informal meetings made so that we can get to know and discuss projects and interests.

The third series of ten Conversas Rotterdam starts on the 14th of January and runs every Wednesday until the 18th of March 2015.

This time Conversas Rotterdam is alternating between two spaces: Mevrouw Bok and Upominki.
During the event three Conversadores (those who talk at Conversas) bring something to share with the gathered group, for thirty minutes each.

As the title suggests itself, Conversas (Conversations in Portuguese) aim at an equal set up from which both the Conversadores and the group, should be able to profit.

Ways of Working, According to an Office Desk

April 1, 2014 posted in collaboration, exhibitions, money, subsidy

Céline Berger, Rare birds in these lands, 2013, video still, courtesy of the artist.

12 April – 03 May 2014
OPENING: Friday 11 April at 19.00h

I am in the studio, it is admin time. I open the mailbox, there is a new message from the photographer that documented my latest exhibition. He has provided the images of my work in tiff format only, so I convert the set to low-res jpegs in order to update my website and portfolio accordingly. Then I forward an earlier video work from 2008, via WeTransfer, to an artist-run space in Brussels. They are hosting a symposium on ‘Clean Aesthetics,’ but I won’t attend since my travel expenses cannot be reimbursed through “sudden budget limitations.” At the same time – upload time estimated at 2 hours and 41 minutes – I try to work through a pile of receipts I kept from my short residency in Riga earlier this year, as VAT returns are due in two days. Can I declare food and drink costs? The studio visit that was planned for later this afternoon was cancelled by the curator, and instead I spend some time on Facebook and Mousse Magazine’s website, rather than starting to read “Bells and Whistles: More Speculative Realism” by Graham Harman. Supposedly, this text could inform a new series of work… I leave the studio. I am taking over a shift from a colleague at the espresso bar…

The group exhibition Ways of Working, According to an Office Desk brings together works by Anca Benera and Arnold Estefan, Céline Berger, Dina Danish, Jakup Ferri, David Horvitz, Sally O’Reilly and Colin Perry, and revolves around the question: “How to profess, rather than how to professionalise?” [continue reading]

Curated by Niekolaas Johannes Lekkerkerk (The Office for Curating, Rotterdam) in the framework of the
5½ Proposals to Work and Live in the Current Millennium programme by Oblique International (Patrícia Pinheiro de Sousa and Susana Pedrosa), in collaboration with Weronika Zielinska (Upominki, Rotterdam).

Ways of Working, According to an Office Desk is generously suprted by Gemeente Rotterdam and Romanian Cultural Institute Brussels

Night Bazaar is an event in the spirit of reflecting current economic pressures and the joining of forces to overcome them. It is a real life performance in sharing, valuing, exchanging and circulating personal commodities and belongings in order to make do.

Throughout 2013, Upominki and friends organised several evenings with second-hand sales, drinks and food, accompanied by film screenings and live music.
Night Bazaar project has been concived and realised in a close collaboration with artist Deirdre M. Donoghue.

Małgosia Goliszewska: I’ll call you when I get there

August 19, 2013 posted in collaboration, events, projects, residency

23 August – 15 September 2013

Opening: 23rd August from 19.00h

The main thread for both residencies happening at Upominki was to create new inquiries for the relations between emerging Eastern European artists and the Rotterdam public. Therefore, we had no specific expectations for Goliszewska’s contribution in this project. Yet when travelling by train to Rotterdam, the artist encountered a number of events, which irreversibly influenced her approach. Being desperate and tired of not being able to run away from that situation, Goliszewska decided to give up fighting it, and let it be. Now after some time spend on working in Rotterdam, she became to realise that such gift of unforeseen events each time brings new subjects into her work.

While focusing on the ideas of control and identity, I’ll call you when I get there illustrates how the stories that we create in our minds, often intervene with our consciousness so that we start to believe in them actually being true. We try to protect the ones that we love the most, but how do we know when caring and protecting turns into invigilation or even an obsession?

The impossibility to predict what can happen next is the main reason to be afraid and worry about one’s future. However the artist wonders would there be any joy in life without the idea of unpredictability?

I’ll call you when I get there – a first international solo exhibition of Małgorzata Goliszewska, is a project conceived in a close collaboration with Weronika Zielinska–Upominki, which they are planning to expand back in Szczecin (Poland), city they both come from.

Małgorzata Goliszewska born in 1985, is a Multimedia Art student at the Art Academy in Szczecin. In 2012 she completed the documentary course in Wajda School in Warsaw. From February to July 2013 she studied and worked in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Since 2011 she directed five short documentaries. She works in media such as film, video, installation, performance, text, sound and drawing. The direct contact with other people becomes an important aspect in her work through which she also tries to explore and broaden the possibilities of documentary.

Closing Event: ARTIST4ARTIST – The economic performance

June 25, 2013 posted in collaboration, events, projects

Sunday 30th June from 14.00 till 18.00

After three months of vigorous and intensive research taking place through daily office meetings, events with our peer guests and public, as well as through, hosting different moments of coming-together between women-entrepreneurs, and girls with many dreams, ARTIST4ARTIST – The economic performance project at Upominki, is coming to an end.
Yet, before ARTIST4ARTIST platform will move out from its temporary office space to its new location, we would like to invite our friends, neighbours and public to join in this informal event and celebrate the opening of a new chapter for ARTIST4ARTIST platform and Yuli Minguel.

On Sunday 30th June from 14.00 till 18.00 we will be hosting a block party accompanied by local musicians and food. Please join us on a lazy Sunday afternoon to listen how the participants of the Brave Girls Sing! Walk taller. Speak louder workshop are jamming with Yuli, and to taste food from other cultures, or bring your own and leave it on the shared table.

Ps. If only the weather will allow us, we will light up a fire on our barbecue. Just make sure to bring something that suits on top of it ☺

To learn more about this project please go to ARTIST4ARTIST

ARTIST4ARTIST – The economic performance is made possible with the kind support of Gemeente Rotterdam.

The educational program Brave girls sing! Walk taller, speak louder is supported by Het Rotterdamse Vrouwenfonds.
